Toronto Independent Escorts has been absolutely enlivened by American artist Ryan
Trecartin’s new show at The Power Plant. Regardless of the quality,
durability or amicability of the work (a little more on that below)
this is an unassailably great thing.

Boston comic Tom Dustin’s set about drinking, fighting and vibrators ended the final round of Yuk Yuks’ annual Great Canadian Laugh Off. He came on after rock-solid sets by locals Patrick Haye, Landry and Martha Chavez, and those of us sitting in the media/publicist corner of the club figured the oversized $25,000 cheque was Haye’s but, after the judges came back, comedy kingpin Mark Breslin was shaking hands with the 34-year old from Beantown.

Filmmaker Ross McLaren’s relative obscurity in the burg where he cut his teeth makes
the OCAD grad a particularly deserving choice for the
Canadian Artist Spotlight at this year’s Images Festival. McLaren’s slate of homecoming events includes an updated “karaoke” version of his seminal Toronto Independent Escorts-punk documentary Crash ’n’ Burn, to be followed by a DJ set by Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham. Jason Anderson recently spoke to McLaren from his New York City home.
